Exciting new opportunities will soon be available for local people to develop enterprise through construction skills in a bespoke centre in heart of New Addington.
The centre is a key part of the Croydon Enterprise programme.
Most people are aware of the construction skills shortages and the job opportunities the 2012 Olympics will bring to London. But there are even greater opportunities locally. Croydon town centre has approximately £2 billion worth of new development work in the pipeline, including Park Place and the Gateway scheme. New Addington itself will benefit from developments including Tesco's, the CETs centre and the council refurbishment of New Addington properties.
These developments will create a huge amount of business opportunities for people with the right skills and foresight to take advantage of them. The centre will develop and support individuals' potential through construction skills, cultivating enterprise that will empower them to set up small businesses, or become self employed.
The wide range of ‘hands on' activities on offer will enable people to develop new skills, broaden existing skills or up-skill previous knowledge associated with construction, whilst nurturing enterprise flair to meet the challenges ahead. Support will be given every step to make sure individuals have the confidence and skills necessary for success.
The 12 week programme focusses on the primary skills of bricklaying, carpentry and plumbing. Staff with industry expertise will ensure the skills and knowledge developed is up to date and relevant. Health and Safety is of paramount importance and this is recognised by participants being offered an industry recognised award (CSCS card) enabling authorisation to work on construction sites.
Alongside the development of these practical skills, support will be given to develop the enthusiasm and ambition required to take the next step into business. Many entrepreneurs start businesses based on their hobbies or particular skills. Consideration of these newly acquired skills, interests and self-belief are key in exploring the potential of developing a profitable business. These opportunities will be further explored and help will be provided to understand what skills individuals already possess, those that need to be developed and how to evaluate business ideas.
Lack of business experience can be seen an obstacle to getting ideas off the ground, however there will be access to successful small business people involved in construction that faced similar challenges to offer guidance and encouragement. Other support will include exploiting ideas and planning for success, introduction to finance and grants, taxes, affairs, payroll and growing your business.
